Stops that sit inside the range are wishes
If your stop would be hit while the range thesis is still intact, the stop is in the wrong place.
Comfort stops — tight, neat, just beyond the last candle — feel responsible. In a range they are often punished. Mid-range noise is the product you are trading around; putting risk inside that noise means you exit while the shelf that justified the trade still stands.
Thesis-changing structure
Define the level that would make you abandon the range idea: a decisive close beyond the opposite edge, or a break and hold of the swing that formed your entry shelf. That is where the stop belongs. Size the position down until the wider stop still risks an amount you can take three times in a bad week.
Language check
If your journal says “tight stop for safety,” rewrite it. Safety in range trading structure comes from surviving normal travel inside the box, not from a narrow ticket that dies on ordinary noise.
